Insightful and Inspirational are two words that describe the module on Zoology held at the Africa Seminary on the weekend of 13 to 15 August. Michaël Merle has a remarkable talent to package his vast knowledge in a succinct and entertaining way. Following the module on embryology and the development of plants, he also presented the evolution of animals as seen through the lens of the zodiac and its cosmic influences.
From this perspective, a world-view emerges that points to an super-sensible intelligence that prepared the foundation for a divine experiment that culminates in the formation of the physical human being. From the protozoa that formed in the constellation of the Crab, through all 12 zodiacal signs, until we reach mammals in the constellation of Leo, we discover how Spirit expresses in matter and in Life.
Unlike the ancient mystics, who could still perceive the gods in the starry spheres and recognised cosmic influences in the movement of the planets, we have lost this connection. Into the vacuum stepped Darwinism and a modern empirical science that deny spirit. All that remains of this last link can be found in Greek, Norse and Eastern mythology. Spiritual Science is the bridge that reconnects us with this ancient wisdom in a new away. Presented with a picture of how long it took for Divine Will to unfold, I often despair at how little we have achieved in the march to becoming fully human. The signature of evolution, understood in the right way, is not the survival of the fittest, but one of collaboration.
While these modules reconnect us with the cosmos, they also ground us in the mineral, plant and animal kingdoms on Earth. We carry all three kingdoms in our physical bodies. We too are branches of that healing life force, the true vine stalk, as our new Erzoberlenker expressed in the August newsletter, that grow and mature on the earth with the goal of spreading the fruits of our true Humanity. I look forward to the forthcoming module in September that completes this unfolding picture with the evolution of the Human Being.
