What is the Africa Seminary?
From 2013 to 2017 encounter weekends of gathering, sharing and discovering new meaning and purpose for life as well as a deeper appreciation of the Christian way, took place in Grahamstown, Hogsback, Port Alfred, Cape Town and Johannesburg. In 2018 the Africa Seminary found a home at the Church of Lazarus in Ferndale Randburg, Johannesburg. This made it possible for the Africa Seminary to hold six weekend modules in 2018 in Johannesburg, considering a knowledge of the Spirit (Anthroposophy) and the renewed sacraments of the Christian Community.
In 2019 the Africa Seminary extended the work by holding another six weekend modules in Johannesburg focussed on the Gospels and Anthroposophy, in terms of a relationship to Christ in prayer and meditation.
In 2020 and 2021 a way was found to hold six in-person weekends focussed on the principle of threefoldness through a practical way of observing the earth and nature. A return to three of the 2018 Foundational Modules was possible in 2022. With the input brought by Rev. Jonah Evans in February 2023, this year looks to unfold a new exciting topic.

Where is the Africa Seminary?
On one hand it is where two or three (or more) gather to reflect and consider their own ever deepening spiritual journey and path of self- development. On the other hand it is a place. For the past five years the Africa Seminary did not have a fixed abode or permanent building.
It remained a living and very mobile gathering, meeting, sharing and discovering experience that was guided and cared for by a few facilitators. It has come together for extended weekends in the Eastern Cape (in Grahamstown, Hogsback and Port Alfred), in Cape Town and in Johannesburg.
Now it has been able to find a base and land in a particular way on the earth in South Africa. Here we can explore questions and consider options that could shed light on our deepest longings and quests for meaning and purpose. In this way gatherings will emerge in Johannesburg at The Church of Lazarus and steps considered for a more regular and committed exploration.
In 2018 gatherings emerged in Johannesburg at The Church of Lazarus with a more regular and committed exploration. Six modules exploring a theme launched an introductory year. The theme of: The essential nature and purpose of the human being: Finding meaning in the Spirit, allowed for questions and options to be considered what began shedding light on our deeper longings and quests for meaning and purpose.
The Africa Seminary is open for registration for 2019 for any student who wishes to participate. Six weekend modules will take place in the course of the year at the The Church of Lazarus in Johannesburg. The weekends are planned to extend the work of 2018 by working with the Gospels and Anthroposophy, in terms of a relationship to the Christ in prayer and meditation. It is hoped that the courses will be facilitated again by Rev. Michaël Merle and Rev. Reingard Knausenberger, with the support of other priests and guests facilitators.
The modules are open to anyone interested in participating in this extended exploration. Participants may choose to attend one or other module, as they see fit. There are no expectations of qualifying or passing grades within the Africa Seminary — this is a path of self- development and it will unfold for each as it must.
